A Trail With the Shepards

Experience the Transhumance Trails in Montemuro

This tour takes us to one of the most enchanted corners of the Portuguese interior. The Serra de Montemuro is a mountain range situated between the Douro River to the north and the Paiva River to the south. The highest point reaches an altitude of 1381 meters.

In this part of the country, shepherds still practice transhumance, a traditional pastoral practice that involves the seasonal migration of herds between different regions to take advantage of pastures at different times of the year. Typically, this migration occurs between summer and winter grazing areas, following an annual pattern. In this tour we will explore one of these trails and visit villages and landscapes that have remained virtually untouched for the last 50 years. We will also visit a  cooperative composed of four women who produces items in burel, linen, and wool, woven on manual looms using traditional methods with a contemporary design.

We will not return without a visit to the thermal baths, where we can enjoy a relaxing massage.

This is one of our favorite tours.

Come discover why!
